Continuing the 'troops on the frontier' connection, I was curious to see what the Temple of Mithras, in the City of London, looked like on Google Earth.<br /><br />Here it is, lost in the dank shadows by the now semi-derelict Bucklersbury House. Moved, 'reconstructed', and all for a rather sad office block that's about to be demolished after fifty years.<br /><br />I'm not sure whether the redevelopment of 'Walbrook Square' which involved 'replacing' the temple back in position, is now going ahead, given the recession.<br /><a href="http://www.fosterandpartners.com/News/235/Default.aspx"><br />http://www.fosterandpartners.com/News/235/Default.aspx</a><br /><br />(for a measured write-up of Bucklersbury House, and the new scheme, see: <a href="http://www.postwarbuildings.com/buildings/bucklersbury-house-temple-court">http://www.postwarbuildings.com/buildings/bucklersbury-house-temple-court</a>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13413650999024742510noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1463203448271013316.post-46194473250393470122009-04-18T20:08:00.000-07:002009-04-18T21:18:28.875-07:00Possibly... 'When on Google Earth 19'...I guessed right here:<br /><br /><a href="http://sjmcdonough.blogspot.com/2009/04/when-on-google-earth-18.html">http://sjmcdonough.blogspot.com/2009/04/when-on-google-earth-18.html</a><br /><br />Blogger and I don't really get on, but here, I hope, is a specially-created WOGE-19 staging post.<br /><br /><span style="font-weight: bold;">When on Google Earth<br /><br /></span><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">Q: What is When on Google Earth?</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">A: It’s a game for archaeologists, or anybody else willing to have a go!</span></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">Q: How do you play it?</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">A: Simple, you try to identify the site in the picture.</span></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">Q: Who wins?</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">A: The first person to correctly identify the site, including its major period of occupation, wins the game.</span></div><div><br /></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">Q: What does the winner get?</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-size:medium;">A: The winner gets bragging rights and the chance to host the next When on Google Earth on his/her own blog!</span></div><div><br />--------------------<br /><br />My first choice was foiled by lamentable Google Earth coverage of the West coast of Ireland. My second option looked, frankly, great. But... it was a walled city in a desert, and we've had a few of those.<br /><br />The third choice has a very faint connection with the second, but is a little bit different. It also has a faint connection (in my head) with Jamie Bell, of Billy Elliot fame (this is more of a clue). Hopefully it won't appear too cheesy or obvious to WOGE-ers. (A fourth, even more urban site, still with a connection to choice two - are you following this? - occurred to me, but is probably way too famous; I'll reveal the stream of associations at the end).<br /><br />Click for the larger image.<br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgukYLMeue-flI55-pMig6ozcrLJ7wzIrJksQTg-rZ1_AnrUEwWdZF-D6gjSNAINRT215vxrqqmGNFCvj-ZbuyIp9Je2WxoQKm8TRlJqxkzWfRpEjCZGxL3J9h4sgpwdjmSEqcS5LP3fEc/s1600-h/screen-capture-3.png"><img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; display: block; text-align: center; cursor: pointer; width: 400px; height: 364px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgukYLMeue-flI55-pMig6ozcrLJ7wzIrJksQTg-rZ1_AnrUEwWdZF-D6gjSNAINRT215vxrqqmGNFCvj-ZbuyIp9Je2WxoQKm8TRlJqxkzWfRpEjCZGxL3J9h4sgpwdjmSEqcS5LP3fEc/s400/screen-capture-3.png" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5326237644059215362" border="0" /></a><br /><br />Expecting a solution by sunrise...<br /><br /></div>Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13413650999024742510noreply@blogger.com8
